In many fires, buildings can become unstable as a result of the heat and as they collapse on themselves. In the process of fighting the fire, firefighters have to be careful that they don't create dangerous conditions for victims trapped in those buildings. However, losing their lives is no match for their duty to protect others. Firefighters carry a tool called a "jaws of life" to help them gain access to people who are trapped under debris without creating dangers for those inside. In some fires, buildings collapse on their own due to the intense heat and the flames of the fire. These fires can be dangerous for firefighters as victims can be trapped under a collapsed building. Therefore, they need a tool that can help them gain access to those victims. Most firemen do not carry a tool that can help them gain access to victims under debris without causing danger. The most common tool used is called a "jaws of life". The jaws consists of four flat steel sheets attached to rods which also extend from it. A fireman uses it to cut into a car or vehicle and then pry the door open. Then, they can gain access to the victim without causing danger of further injury. Firefighters used to think that there was never a time when they would need to use the jaws on a human body. They thought of using using it only on vehicles and dead bodies where there was no life left. This is no longer the case because of incidents like the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 where firefighters had to extract people from under rubble after a building collapsed on its own due to massive damage from terrorist- detonated explosives. They have now widely used the jaws on human bodies to save lives. The type of fire that causes victims to be trapped under debris is not limited to the type of building. Some fires are caused by natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. Hurricanes are so intense that they often cause many people to be trapped underneath their houses. When this happens, firefighters have to use their jaws of life to rescue them without causing further injury to those who are already injured. In 2008, there was a major earthquake in Haiti where 2,000 people died due to earthquakes and collapsed buildings that came after it. Rescue workers used the jaws of life to save hundreds of people who were trapped under buildings, or whose limbs were trapped under debris. While this tool continues to be used mostly on victims trapped in vehicles, natural disasters are also proving that this tool can be used on humans as much as it is used on vehicles. Firefighters continue to use the jaws of life in buildings where fires have caused walls and roofs to collapse onto their victims. They continue to be able to save lives by using this tool not only on vehicles but also for human lives. This tool helps them gain access to people who do not have much time because if they are left under there for too long, they might die. cfa1e77820
